We owned our Whirlpool Gold Series WRF990SLAM00 for about 1.5 years, just past the 12-month warranty, when it started having problems. Things started getting worse slowly, the freezer started getting warm, then the refrigerator section, until it finally died completely toward the end of its 3-year life.

We had a certified technician come out to inspect it, and discovered that there was a leak in the evaporator. The technician said that after he fixes it, it will never leak. This fact, a frank discussion with the tech, and extensive online research lead us to understand that the refrigerator was likely damaged (leaking) from the very first day, and the problem did not become apparent enough to notice until after the warranty expired. After some time on the phone with Whirlpool, they eventually offered to pay just for the part, and even that was like pulling teeth.

The diagnostics and repair cost us almost $500 out of pocket. Big mistake buying this product and expecting it to last.

So, 6 months after this repair was performed, the refrigerator and freezer compartments are running warm again. The replaced part was a Whirlpool part, and it was installed by one of their authorized technicians.

Of course the part and service are past their warranty periods.

How can this company get away with selling such poor quality equipment to consumers??? Is the expectation for us to pay $500 every 6 months to keep fixing a "Gold" series appliance?

We just had the same problem with our whirlpool gold French door. The freezer wasn't staying cold.

Whirlpool said we needed a technician. Hired one who said he knew what was wrong.

Whirlpool knew the evaporator was faulty. He said the good news is whirlpool would pay for the part, but the repair is $400.00

If more people complain about this, we may need a lawyer to file a class action suit

This is why it is always best to buy a basic, cheaper fridge that you can throw out when problems arise.
