The icemaker in our Whirlpool French Door fridge died for the second time--days out of warranty. (the first time, Whirlpool covered the repair since it was under a year) The A and E service guy was ok--he started by saying how much he hates these icemakers.

When looking up our model, he found a redesigned replacement unit available (~$250).

Upon calling Whirlpool, I was told by phone rep & supervisor that there's no "rework" alert for our model & serial #.

How come the guy from A&E had it in his system? Maybe Whirlpool knew it was a bad design, but doesn't want to play for all of the replacements...
